I was having a conversation about e-brakes with my uncle the other day, and was amazed to find out he dose bot use it on his vehicles which are all auto. I am wondering is this normal practice? When I had my zx5 in auto I always used it. Is he crazy?

I used it on my Ranger until one of the parking brake shoes fell apart. mine has rear disc brakes where the parking brake is a small drum inside the rotor “hat.” I’ve got the parts to totally overhaul the brakes on this truck; good beefy rotors front and rear, Hawk pads, new parking brake shoes, and a big bottle of brake fluid.

Technically... one should not rely in the parking pawl in an automatic transmission to hold the weight vehicle. It isn’t meant for that, especially on hills.
Once you’ve seen how tiny the parking pawl is in an automatic transmission, it’ll make you think.

I use it when parked on an incline or when I have my camper hooked up to it, but if it’s just my truck on level ground, I don’t bother.

I only use mine if I am parking on a hill. Part of that is growing up in MN though. The bottoms of cars are so rusty that there is a good chance the cable will break or get jammed if it hasn’t been used in a while. And since it is so flat, most people never used them.

I use a parking brake in my automatic cars only when I park on a steep incline to reduce stress on the prawl.
So maybe 5 times in my life. It’s really unnecessary in my opinion - the odds of my prawl coming out and car rolling away are slim to none really.

I have always used a parking brake and always will. Up until I got my Dart, all the cars I have driven have been automatic. My parents also use the parking brakes in their cars (all auto). Doesn’t place unnecessary strain on the transmission IMO

I’ve literally never met anyone who regularly uses the parking brake with an automatic, and was honestly unaware that doing so was a thing until I saw your post.

Unless you’re on a steep incline there’s no reason to on an auto

My Blazer has a broken parking brake release, so I never use it. If I’m parking on a hill I rely on the tire turned against the curb, and the parking pawl which does a surprisingly good job. In the Subaru I use the handbrake mostly out of habit, but also because it’s good to have a backup

Same situation here in Michigan. We have some hills, but most parking situations aren’t bad enough to demand use of a parking brake.

I’m the only person I know who uses the parking brake. (Of people I know who drive automatics, that is). So, yeah, it’s pretty normal practice.

I only use them on hills in automatic cars. I don't leave manuals in gear except on hills, either.

I never used it in any of the three automatic cars I’ve owned. My current fleet is all manual and I use it in all three of them.

All of the company cars are automatic, and never engaged when I get in one.
The car Secretary also told me that there have been a few people who couldn’t make the cars drive because it was on, because I’m the only one who uses them. One person drove miles with it on.

I’ve not owned an automatic which the parking brake
worked,
not to mention used it in one. That said, if it worked, I’d probably use it.

My mom and bro with their 09-10 Accent sedans with Autos never use the E-brake when parking...I try and tell them without it the only thing holding their car in place is a tiny little parking pawl when the car is in park....but they won’t listen to me and start using it....
People with auto transmissions....when your car is in park and you are not using your handbrake, the entire weight of your vehicle is RESTING ON THIS TINY PIECE OF METAL. If it fails, off goes your car....PLEASE use your parking brake!

It seems like autos in the family don’t use the handbrake (namely mom’s ody and dad’s bimmer), parking pawl is supposedly sufficient.

I rarely even use the parking brake on my manual. I just leave it in gear unless I'm on a hill.

I have always driven manuals till I bought my new car. I put mine on out of habit. It took about six months before I got use to not having to push the clutch in. I still hold the brakes when starting my car and look like a total dumbass starting my car. All of my driveways have had an incline so I use it. I have had a car roll to the gutter before. Now it’s used as an extra measure.

I know people that have the same attitude about using the brake with an automatic. There is nothing you can do to change their mind because their car has never rolled away, and that will be their argument.
I use it all the time. I’m a belt & suspender, condom & pull out, alarm clock & wake-up call kind of guy.

Pretty much the same in most auto transmissions, regardless of brand....I liken it to a metal stick holding up your entire car.
